The Infection Preventionist is responsible for implementing and maintaining the multiple facets of the Infection Control Program. S/he is a liaison between all departments and the Infection Control Committee. This individual maintains a routine surveillance program of patients, personnel, and the environmental problems that present a real or potential threat to the welfare of patients, visitors, or personnel throughout the institution. Serves as member of the Infection Control Committee. Promotes compliance with accreditation, certification and regulatory requirement. Must possess one of the following:

o Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in Nursing, Medical Technology, Microbiology, or Public Health is required

o Bachelor’s degree in another related field with previous infection control experience and CIC certification is required


o Minimum of two (2) years of experience in an acute care or public health setting is required; RN with at least two years of Infection Control Quality experience is preferred

o Previous experience in infection control or public health is preferred

o Certification in Infection Control within three (3) years’ employment in the role required for all

o Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) also requires Texas RN license or temporary TX RN license; should obtain permanent license within 90 days. Compact license acceptable according to current Board of Nursing requirements

o Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology also requires ASCP-MT or Clinical Scientist (CS)

o Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology also requires specialization in clinical microbiology and registry


o Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through on-going skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations

o Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security

o Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles

o Competent in Infection Control Practices including Isolation Precautions, hospital surveillance and construction projects

o Maintains current knowledge regarding all laws, regulatory and accreditation standards

o Proficient with computer programs to complete job duties independently

o Demonstrates the ability to work independently with little or no direct supervision
